Our History

The P.R.E.V.E.N.T. Clinic was established in 2001, to provide testing, lifestyle counselling and medical treatment to adults with a known/ suspected heart problem, or at risk for heart disease.

Our non-profit clinic has served over 7,500 patients to date, and is a recognized provider of outpatient cardiology care in the Kitchener/Cambridge/Waterloo community and surrounding areas.

Our Philosophy

We believe prevention is the key to long-term health. Our philosophy is to work in close partnership with you, to consider both personal lifestyle changes and the latest medical treatments to help you live a heart-healthy life.

In any successful partnership, each side does its part: we will take personal responsibility for providing information and tools to support your cardiac health, and we will encourage you to take personal responsibility for taking medications correctly and making changes to improve your lifestyle.

Our Cardiologist & Medical Professionals

Dr. Pandey is our chief physician and a cardiologist at Cambridge Memorial Hospital. He received his medical degree from the University of Toronto, where he also trained in invasive cardiology, cardiac catheterization, and cardiovascular research. Prior to moving his practice to Cambridge in 1998, Dr. Pandey worked at the Wellesley Hospital (Toronto), Peel Memorial Hospital (Brampton), and Trillium Hospital (Mississauga).

Dr. Pandey works with a highly experienced team of medical professionals to support you, including nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and medical administrative staff.

Preparing For Your First Visit

For most patients, expect your first appointment to take about one hour. This is an important first step so please be sure to bring the following items with you:

  • Your three-day diary (eating and exercise)
  • Your Ontario Health Insurance card
  • A list of all your current medications (including dosages)

After you check-in, you will fillout a privacy of information consent form and complete a lifestyle questionnaire. Then you will meet with various clinic staff to:

  • Have your blood pressure taken, along with other measurements such as height/weight
  • Have an electrocardiogram (ECG) test
  • Review your three-day diary, current medications, and blood test results
  • Review any symptoms or changes in your health that you wish to discuss
  • Discuss ways you can improve your health, including lifestyle and/or medication changes
  • Receive a "Report Card" on your current heart health, your lifestyle goals, and recommended medications for ongoing risk reduction. You will also receive information on other community/support resources to help you achieve your lifestyle goals.

What to Expect in Follow-Up Visits

For most patients, each subsequent visit will take about 30 minutes. You will go through similar steps to assess your progress, and will receive an updated "Report Card" on your heart health, lifestyle goals, and medications.

You may not see Dr. Pandey at every visit, but he does supervise and coordinate all of your cardiac care at the clinic.

Office Services & Guidelines

Most patients are referred to us from their family doctor and stay with us for many years, where we work together to achieve positive health outcomes. We offer both individual care/counselling and group education classes.

We also see patients who are referred to us for testing only, where all results are sent back to the family doctor. Tests done in our clinic include:

  • 24-hour holter monitoring
  • 2-week loop monitoring
  • Treadmill exercise 'stress testing'
  • 24-hour blood pressure monitoring
  • 2-D and 3-D echocardiograms

Most clinic services are covered by OHIP, however there are some uninsured services (e.g., 24-hour blood pressure monitoring). Ask the staff at the front desk for the uninsured fee guide.

Office Hours

Regular office hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (we are open at 8:00 a.m. for the unhooking of monitors only). Occasionally, we are open on weekends for cardiac testing.

Please arrive for your appointment on time. If you need to reschedule, please phone us 48 hours in advance, or there will be a $25 charge for a missed appointment.

Note: our facility is not equipped to handle urgent medical issues. If you have chest pain, shortness of breath, or any other worrying symptom, go to your local Emergency Department for immediate care.

How We Can Make A Difference

Recent medical studies have shown that 90% of all cardiac risks are preventable!

Positive changes, such as quitting smoking and following healthier eating and exercise habits, can help reduce your heart health risks and improve your overall health. When combined with prescription drug therapies as appropriate, these strategies become even more powerful in helping to prevent heart disease.

Our mission, as part of the Cambridge Cardiac Care Centre, is to:

  • Provide you with comprehensive cardiac care, with a focus on prevention of cardiovascular disease.
  • Educate and assist you in achieving lifestyle changes to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Keep up to date on the latest medical research and advances in the field, so that new tests and treatments can be offered to you, if appropriate, and when they become available.
  • Help create a "heart healthy" community through educational initiatives and strong partnerships with all of our patients, referring physicians and local health organizations.
