Devices and Interventional Procedures in Heart Failure

Biventricular (CRT) Pacemaker:

Sometimes, in heart failure patients, the ventricles beat at different times, which disrupts the ability of the heart to pump effetively. A CRT Pacemaker helps regulate the heart rhythm and also delivers electrical impulses to both ventricles in a synchronized manner to ensure they beat in unison, improving the efficiency of the heart.

Automatic Implantable Cardioverter-Defibfrillator (AICD)

In heart failure patients at a very sigifncant risk for cardiac arrest, an AICD may be implanted. AICDs monitor the heart rhythm delivers shocks to control life-threatening arrythmias (to prevent sudden cardiac arrest).

CRT-D pacemakers act like normal CRT pacemakers but can also defibrillate the heart in the event of a cardiac arrest

Interventional and Surgical Procedures sometimes used in Heart Failure

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) A type of heart surgery that can create new routes around narrowed and blocked coronary arteries, permitting incrdeased blood flow to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle. Left VentricularAssist Device (LVAD) An Artificial pump surgically can beinserted into a ventricle to help theheart pump more effectively. TranscatheterAortic ValveReplacement A catheter-basedprodcedure toreplace acalcified aorticvalve to allow formore bloodthrough to therest of the body CardiacAblation Serious arrhythmiasor electrical problemsthat don’t respond tomedications cansometimes be corrected by cardiacablation Transcatheter MitralValve Repair Through a catheter-based procedure, aleaky mitral valve is tightened so lessblood backs up into the lungs Cardiac Transplant Rarely, patients require aheart transplant. In the vastmajority of patients, other therapies are pursued. Valve Replacement In patients withvalvular diseasesthat contribute toheart failure,open-heartsurgery toreplace heartvalves may berequired.
